John Hamilton of Udston (d Langside 13.05.1568)
m. Margaret Dalzell (dau of Sir Robert Dalziel (Dalzell) of that ilk)
Anderson, supported by TSP & HJHeraldry, show John as father of William (m. Margaret Hamilton of Longhermistoun) father of John (m. Margaret Muirhead). 'HamiltonHistory' reports that "Anderson, on a misreading of (a) charter .., inserts a William Hamilton of Udstoun, called "Willie Wisehead", as an extra generation in the succession".
1. John Hamilton of Udston (b 1567)
m1. (sp) (Margaret) Hamilton (dau of _ Hamilton of Longhermistoun) named Margaret by Anderson
## Anderson, but not TSP or HJHeraldry, shows that Wiiliam & Margaret had (apart from John) a son called James who is presumably the James shown below. Anderson also shows a daughter Margaret, wife of Sir James Hamilton of Broomhill and mother of 1st Lord Belhaven, as of this generation but TCP (Belhaven) & Birnie (source used for Hamilton of Broomhill) show her to be a generation later (see below). [Anderson also shows another Margaret, m (1606) Sir James Hamilton of Broomhill, in the next generation which appears to be duplication.] Anderson also shows Barbara, Jean & Catherine as of this generation & marriage but we follow TSP (and, of course, 'HamiltonHistory') in showing them as daughters of ...

The title came through Margaret's mother who was daughter of 1st Lord Belhaven who had appointed John as his heir under a new patent which set the title to pass to the male descendants of John Hamilton of Udstoun (b 1567, near top of this page).
  (1) John Hamilton, 3rd Lord Belhaven (d 17.11.1721)
  m. Anne Bruce (d 08.1707, dau of Andrew Bruce of Edinburgh, cadet of Earlshall)

  (B) James Hamilton, 5th Lord Belhaven (d unm 25.01.1777, 3rd son)
'HamiltonHistory' reports that, when James died, his estates passed to the family of his cousin Mary, shown below as married to William Nisbet, but the title passed separately. William Hamilton (above) claimed the title as senior representative of the Udston family but Scottish Law set that the succession passed not to (the descendants of) the eldest brother of the James who was grandfather of the 2nd Lord but to (the descendants of) his next immediate younger brother, both being brothers of the mother of the 1st Lord. This led to the title passing to Robert Hamilton of Wishaw (de jure 6th Lord), successor to William Hamilton, 1st of Wishaw (below), but that was not recognised until after Robert's death so the next person to both assume the title and be accepted as such was Robert's son, William Hamilton, 7th Lord Belhaven.

iv. Sir Archibald Hamilton of Rosehall (formerly 'Haggs', Lanarkshire), 1st Bart (d 11.1709, Dean of Guild of Edinburgh, MP, 6th son)
