However, we doubt that we will be able to find the connection in the very near future and think that, with this caveat, the page is 'good enough' to launch as it is. (2) BLG1886 starts its article on this family with the following: "This is an ancient Surrey and Sussex famiy, and bears the arms taken out in 1577 by Thomas Godman, of Westlands, near Wotton, Surrey. This Thomas Godman sold Westlands in 1582, and removing into Sussex, resided on the estate of Wivelsfield, which was in the possession of the family in 1513, where they owned considerable estates, and built Oat Hall, 1600, which passed to the Shirleys of Preston, about 1740, by the marriage of Elizabeth, only dau. of Joh Godman, Esq. Her cousin, Joseph Godman, Esq., settling in Chichester ...". We start with that Joseph.
