Walter Cromwell (or Smyth) of Putney
Walter is described in TCP as a fuller, wool shearer, brewer and blacksmith.
1. Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex, Lord Chamberlain (b c1485, d 24.07.1540)
Thomas came to eminence through working with Cardinal Wolsey. After the fall of the Cardinal, he became a close advisor to King Henry VII and, working with Archbishop Cranmer, was a driving force behind the English Reformation not least in respect of the dissolution of the monasteries. He was instrumental in arranging the marriage of King Henry to Anne of Cleves but, after her fall, fell into the King's disfavour and was attainted, arrested, and beheaded (without trial) at the Tower of London.
