Families covered: Clinton of Lincoln, Clinton of Maxstoke (Maxtock or Marstoke)
William Clinton, 4th Lord of Maxstoke (Maxtock or Marstoke) (b 14.09.1377, d 30.07.1431/2)
m1. (c1407) Anne Trivett (dau of Sir Thomas Trivett by Elizabeth Limbury)
m2. (1409) Alice or Ann Botreaux (d 17.10.1420, dau of William, Lord Botreaux)
1. | John Clinton, 5th Lord of Maxstoke or Maxtock (b 1410, d 24.09.1464)
BP1934 identifies John's wife as Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Fynes of Hurstmonceaux, Lord Dacre, but TCP shows her as 1st wife of his son, the 6th Lord. TCP reports that this John, 5th Lord, married twice but does not name the 1st wife although it does show her as mother of the 6th Lord. 'TUDOR' identifies the 1st wife as shown below and shows no children by the 2nd wife (also named by TCP as Margaret St. Leger).
m1. (c29.10.1431) Joan Ferrers (dau of Edward Ferrers, 6th Lord of Chartley)
A. | John Clinton, 6th Lord (d 29.02.1488)
(1) BP1934 shows only John's marriage to Ann Stafford, thereby indicating that she was mother of his successor. TCP names 2 wives, showing Elizabeth as mother of the 7th Lord. 'TUDOR' shows Elizabeth as mother of the 7th Lord and Anne as mother of another John. We provisionally follow that. (2) John and his successors appear to have claimed the barony of Saye despite the fact that, according to TCP, his father had renounced the claim to that barony that he obtained through his ancestress, Idonea de Saye, wife of the 3rd Lord Clinton. The barony of Saye (and Sele) was held by a junior branch of the Fiennes family to which his wife belonged. This may have been part of the reason why John and his successors sometimes used the name Fiennes. |
