Families covered: Charnock of Astley, Charnock of Charnock, Charnock of Leyland
(1) Visitation (1567), supported by Visitaton (1613), identifies the arms of this family as "Argent, on a bend sable, three cross crosslets of the field". (2) The 1613 Visitation starts with Richard Charnock of Charnock father of Thomas father of Henry (temp Edward I) father of Adam (temp Edward 2, shown as married to Joane, dau/coheir of Sir Richard Molyneux of Crosby) father of Henry (temp Edward 3) father of William (temp Richard 2 + Henry 4) father of Ranulph (Ralp) who m. dau of Ratclyff of Tyngrave. We are suspcicious of that and start with the first mentioned by the 1567 Visitation who was Henry son of Rauf. VCH starts with Richard (a 1242), succeeded before 1284 by Henry son of Thomas with, in 1304, Adam son of Henry espoused to Joan, dau of Richard de Molyneux, with Adam succeeded by Henry (a 1370) whose son William was husband of Margaret. VCH then notes "THe succession for some time is uncertain." Even though VCH seems to be supportive of the 1613 Visitation, provisionally we ignore the early generations mentioned by the 1613 Visitation and follow the 1567 Visitation. |
