Advance Notice on Research

It should be clear to all that we do not take the Ancient & Mythical Section of this database all that seriously. Similarly, although we do take most of the Continental Section quite seriously (but draw attention to the fact that some of it should really be within the Ancient & Mythical Section), that section is also not a high priority for us. Our main focus is on the British Section which we are trying to make as broad as possible so as to give a good target for people to find a link to. HOWEVER, we do aspire to make the whole database as reliable as possible and we know that many site visitors are very interested in the Ancient & Mythical and Continental Sections and enjoy finding ancestors there. Accordingly, we accept the need to make those sections as reliable as we can. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done. Although there are also difficulties with the early generations in the British Section, the other sections often rely on sources which disagree with each other, sometimes dramatically so. Given that they include people who, if they lived at all, lived at times for which there are few if any remaining reliable records, that is not surprising. Given our limited resources, we have sometimes just prepared a page for the Ancient & Mythical and Continental Sections as well as we could in a short time and accepted that not everyone would agree with it. To improve on this, from time to time we shall focus on particular pages within those sections and go through them in some detail, improving or inserting the notes needed to highlight discrepancies, etc., in an attempt to bring them up to the same standards we set for the British Section. We would appreciate assistance with this.

We intend to review the following pages in due course. If you are interested in any of the pages listed here and have researched them in any detail and have found errors or gaps in what we are showing there at present or can advise us on what sources to use for our review or otherwise have suggestions on how best to proceed with the review, please share your views & findings with us so that we may accommodate them when we carry out our review.

Update from PCBG (10.04.09) : My intention to review the above-mentioned pages was first announced almost a year ago but, in the absence of any comments from our visitors, I have held back from the review. I will wait a bit longer but will reconsider the worthiness of giving Advance Notice of such reviews if no comments are received.

NOTES
1. The British in 'British Section' stands for the British Isles, not just the UK, and so includes the whole of Ireland.
2. The above covers work to be done on the Ancient & Mythical and Continental Sections of the database. A separate page, Draft & temporary pages : Can you help?, identifies specific pages within the British Section for which assistance is sought.
